FEVER

Understanding Fever: Causes, Care, and When to See a Doctor

Fever is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care — and one of the most misunderstood. A fever isn't an illness in itself; it's your body's natural defense mechanism, a sign that your immune system is actively fighting an infection or responding to inflammation.

What counts as a fever?
A normal body temperature hovers around 98.6°F (37°C), though it naturally varies through the day and from person to person.

Generally:
Mild fever: 99°F–100.9°F (37.2°C–38.3°C)
Moderate fever: 101°F–103°F (38.3°C–39.4°C)
High fever: Above 103°F (39.4°C)

Common causes
Most fevers in adults and children are caused by viral infections such as flu, common cold, or gastroenteritis.
Other causes include: Bacterial infections (throat, urinary tract, lungs), Vaccinations (mild, short-lived fever)
Heat exhaustion, Inflammatory conditions, Certain medications.

Home care for mild fever: Rest and stay well hydrated with water, ORS, or clear fluids. Dress in light clothing and keep the room comfortably cool. Use paracetamol/acetaminophen as directed for comfort. Monitor temperature every few hours. Eat light, easily digestible food if appetite allows

When to seek medical attention: Please consult a doctor promptly if you or a family member experience: Fever above 103°F (39.4°C) that doesn't respond to medication; Fever lasting more than 3 days; Fever with severe headache, stiff neck, rash, or confusion; Difficulty breathing or chest pain; Persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration; Fever in an infant under 3 months; Fever in someone with a chronic illness or weakened immunity; Fever accompanied by unexplained bruising or bleeding.

Why timely evaluation matters: Fever is a symptom, not a diagnosis. While most fevers resolve on their own, an accurate evaluation helps rule out infections that need specific treatment — such as bacterial infections requiring antibiotics, or conditions that need urgent care. At Apex Medcare, our team can assess your symptoms, run relevant diagnostics (including on-site lab and diagnostics), and guide you toward the right treatment quickly

Facilities available at Apex Medcare for fever management include, physician, diagnostic lab, nursing staff, day care beds for intravenous injections and antibiotic administration, monitoring and care. In addition, our day care beds have attached washrooms with wifi support.
